Scope[edit]
WOWSA is an organization dedicated to the organization, promotion and recognition of open water swimmers, open water swimming events, open water swimming records, trends, publications, films, podcasts, open water swimming vernacular, and achievements in the marathon swimming, ice swimming, winter swimming, circumnavigation swimming, stage swimming, Olympic 10K Marathon Swim history, extreme swimming, escorting, coaching, kayaking, governing body and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame communities. WOWSA follows swimmers and open water swimming events in oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, dams, reservoirs, canals, channels, lagoons, fjords, estuaries, basins, lochs, coves, meres, firths, sounds, straits, bays and harbors on the seven continents.
WOWSA Establishment & Governance[edit]
WOWSA was established in July 2005 by Steven Munatones in order to provide a plethora of information to support the global growth of open water swimming. Its initial focus was an online platform to promote the introduction of the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was based on the work first established by a now-defunct website, www.10kswimming.com.
Its current board of directors include Antonio (Toño) Argüelles Díaz-González, an Oceans Seven and Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming member from Mexico City, and Quinn Fitzgerald, a 2019 ice swimming world champion from San Francisco. Its advisors include 7-time professional marathon swimming champion Shelley Taylor-Smith, Olympic swimming coach and race director Chris Morgan, and ocean advocate Bruckner Chase.
